    In this first monograph devoted to the Bakongo group’s minkisi-minkondi, more commonly known as “nail fetishes”, we discover a symbiosis of metaphysical conceptions of art and magic, a mixture of aesthetic power and mysterious forces, and of aggressiveness and serenity. Primarily in an area extending from the western portion of Congo-Brazzavile to Cabinda and the western part of Congo-Kinshasa. In centuries past, these “fetishes” were feared and dreaded by Europeans who saw them as an obstacle to their work of conquest and evangelization.
